After seven years of marriage, Cardi B has filed for divorce from Offset. According to Page Six, the petition was filed on July 31. It marks the second instance in which the Bronx rapper has sought to divorce the Migos member, having submitted a separate petition in September 2020 before having it dismissed that November. But this time, it might actually stick.

A statement issued to Page Six from an unnamed source claims that the couple has “grown apart,” counteracting rumors that infidelity was the root of their marriage problems. In December 2018, she announced an amicable split from Offset and considered that they might have “grew out of love.” When Cardi first filed for divorce in 2020, she said, “I just got tired of fucking arguing. I got tired of not seeing things eye to eye.” At the time, they had already spent a year separated before getting back together.

“When me and my husband got into our issues — you know, he cheated and everything — and I decided to stay with him and work together with him, a lot of people were so mad at me; a lot of women felt disappointed in me,” she told Vogue in late 2019. Still, she attempted to make it work. Cardi and Offset have two children together, ages six and three; she is reportedly seeking primary custody in the divorce.

In December 2023, Cardi stated on Instagram Live that she had been single “for a minute now.” She returned to the app shortly after to unleash a rant aimed at Offset, in which she stated, “This motherfucker really likes to play games with me when I’m at my most vulnerable time … You really been doing me dirty after so many fucking years. And it’s so crazy that I got to go to the fucking internet because whenever the fuck I tell you something, you don’t take shit seriously, and I’m so tired of it.”

In her Rolling Stone cover story published earlier this year, Cardi explained that the difficulties in their marriage have been multifaceted. “The part I love is that we really like each other, like a support system. We’re really both each other’s cheerleader,” she said, noting that he pushes her to not overthink her music and trust her artistry.

But at the same time, she added, “We have our own bad stuff. We’re from two different worlds. Sometimes I cannot be … not that I cannot be a wife. It’s just like, my career takes my life. You know what I’m saying? My career comes first, then my kids come second. And then sometimes I don’t realize that I’m putting so many things before my relationship.” She later reframed this list to place her children first.

Beyond their shared duties as parents, Cardi and Offset have been intertwined on a friendship level, too. When Rolling Stone asked about how the rapper was planning on navigating the rocky road, she spoke first for herself, and then for their pairing as a collective. “I think it through. We think it through, because we do love each other. It’s not even about love. We’re best friends,” she began. “And it’s like, ‘OK. Well, there was a time that I didn’t have a best friend, or I didn’t have a support system.’ It’s not even about ‘How do you leave a partner?’ How do you stop talking to your best friend?”
