Cassini’s Division

Ringside View Sa Re Ga Ma [Three stars]

Published by

Ringside View is an eclectic and informed piece of work; a crisp exhibition of Cassini’s Division’s decade long journey as one of Kolkata’s most loved bands. In recent years the band competed on the national (Channel V Launchpad) and international (Sutasi Talent Hunt) level, proving its mettle in both arenas and gaining exposure. With producer Simon Henderson ”“ who worked with the band on Sutasi ”“ on board, this alt rock outfit delivers a crackling debut. ”˜Glowworm’ opens the album with its stunning hook (“I want to fly/Just like Salvador Dali”) alluding to a psychedelic experience with Dali ”“ concluding in a wildly raucous grind of grunge-y guitars and militant drums. Vocalist Rahul Guha Roy fluidly moves through the spoken word, nifty raps, modulating his voice from the melodic to the gritty. Striking riffs like on ”˜Story of my Life’ work a classic distinction for the band. The subversive social statement rides heavy on ”˜Voivoid.’ Inspired by the Jessica Lal murder case, the compelling number cracks down on sordid truths attacking the vile underbelly of Delhi’s powerful elite. But the undisputed gem on this one has to be ”˜Rumble,’ it echoes through in its crystal clarity, electrifying and euphoric at once with its driven melody and lilting optimism. While the album has its moments of glory, few songs leave one slightly stumped, dampening this overwhelming experience in parts. For instance tracks like ”˜Drown’ fizzle out the lyrical spark Roy sustains through most tracks.

Key Tracks: ”˜Rumble,’ ”˜Voivoid’
