Celestial Teapot and Pacifist Kick Off Joint Tour This Week

When Pune-based instrumental act Celestial Teapot opened for U.K. modern metallers Monuments in Mumbai in January last year, they realized their music “fits with a heavier band.” It’s led to joining hands with post-hardcore band Pacifist for their upcoming four-city tour, which kicks off in Hyderabad on March 5th.

Drummer Ashwin Naidu says, “Plus, Pacifist still being new to the scene, we wanted to set this up with someone who needs their music to be heard more.” The run of shows – called Mind the Gap Tour and put together by music community platform WherePostRockDwells and promoters Bohemian Live – comes on the back of Celestial Teapot releasing their new EP Perception in November last year and Pacifist’s release of two singles, “Against the Tide” and “Resolve.”

The bands will perform in Hyderabad on March 5th (alongside local instrumental metal act C6), in Bengaluru on March 7th (with support from metallers Trash Talk), in Kolkata on March 12th (with seasoned metal band Chronic Xorn) and close things off in Guwahati at two-day indoor festival Fusefest, held on March 13th and 14th.

Amongst the first indie bands to announce a tour in a post-lockdown music ecosystem, there were a few jitters along the way. Although a show in Mumbai was originally announced to take place on March 3rd, concerns over rising cases led the date to be stuck out. “Even though the pandemic has changed things, we still feel that getting the music out to people live is the best way to bring in new fans and experience the magic of a well-played live set. Especially after you put a new record out,” Naidu says.

Pacifist drummer Varun Sood notes that they’ve been in “wait-and-watch” mode about the number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra. He adds, “Honestly, we are raring to go, but the safety of the fans and listeners is also paramount. As and when the situation evolves, so will our plans. As of now, we are hoping (with bated breath) that the tour goes smoothly. If something is postponed, that’s okay. Pacifist isn’t a studio band. We do this to belt out songs live. That’s the release for us. And we will go live, if not now then soon enough.”

There’s some new territory for both bands on the tour; Celestial Teapot and Pacifist are both making their debuts in Kolkata and Guwahati. Naidu says about Celestial Teapot’s set for the tour, “It’s going to be all three tracks from the new record Perception, our last single ‘Lumens’ and songs from One Big Sky.”
