‘Cherrapunji Ki Diwali’ Reminds Us What Matters the Most This Festive Season – Family
CreativeLand Asia’s latest work for Netflix India gives the audience a glimpse into how residents of the wettest place on Earth celebrate the festival of lights
Diwali: a festival of lights and adoring family time. Yet, amidst the festive sales, last-minute decor decisions and finding yourself caught up in preparing an array of delicacies, we tend to overlook the crucial aspect of family time. Nudging the audience towards this sentiment, Netflix India has released Cherrapunji Ki Diwali, a film celebrating our ties with our kin, and our close-knit bonds with them.
A story featuring a local cast from Cherrapunji and an original Khasi jingle, the film documents the locals’ tussle against a heavy downpour as they try their best to beat the odds. With damp firecrackers never reaching the point of combustion to the ink blotting the sheets of a handmade Diwali card, it seems like the true spirit of the festive season is a lost cause. But as nightfall dawns, the roads of Cherrapunji light up with smiles and laughter as families huddle together in front of their screens to watch their favorite film, reminding us what Diwali is all about.
Primarily helmed by the Khasi song, the upbeat jingle is reflective of Cherrapunji’s undying and infectious spirit. Based on a comment the streaming giant left on the video, the lyrics (which have been translated into Hindi) paint a clear picture of the situation, encouraging listeners to never dim the lights, irrespective of what surprises the weather might cast upon them: “Ya zindagi ka jashn ho/ Baarish ho chaahe/ Roshni sada maujood hai/ Baarish ho chaahe/ Roshni sada buland hai.”
