After months of anticipation and a tasteful selection of pre-release singles, South Korean rapper-songwriter CL releases her first full-length studio album, Alpha. The release was preceded by two singles, “Spicy” and “Lover Like Me,” both of which are included in the record.

Forrayed by the lead single “Tie a Cherry,” the track positions CL as a force of unapologetic individualism and self-love: “Hand on my chest I’m flying/ No one can see what I can see/ There’s only one and me in this world/ I can tie a cherry/ Look, I got a gold tongue/ The chemistry in this body/ Supervision open your eyes.”

Co-written by CL alongside seven songwriters– including South Korean rapper sokodomo– the track builds an atmosphere of freedom with a blend of hip-hop and bass. Throughout the music video, CL is seen owning her eye for fashion as she keeps switching up her glorious wardrobe; she moves from an all-black royal-esque ensemble to one sporting boxing gloves (a possible metaphor for her strength) and many more as dancers perform around her.

From “Spicy” to “Lover Like Me” and “Tie a Cherry,” CL lets listeners into the innermost pages of her journal, taking them through the experiences that helped shape her to the powerhouse she is today. While “Spicy” was a celebration of her Asian heritage, “Lover Like Me” saw the rapper share her take on the complexities of lost love and fame; “You come back running, running/ Yeah, you miss my love/ And you miss my money/ I’ll tell you something, something.”

Now with “Tie A Cherry,” the three singles act as an entree to CL’s new album, giving a taste of the stories and themes the rapper has earnestly explored. Alpha also features CL’s 2020 singles “HWA” and “5 STAR,” which were officially the start of this comeback journey and marked her powerful return to the scene as the Baddest Female.
