Composer Jatin Pandit and Son Raahul Jatin Tap Into Bollywood Nostalgia on ‘Waqt’

When you’ve been part of making some of the most timeless songs in Bollywood music history like composer Jatin Pandit, writing about love is perhaps second nature. Joined by his son Raahul Jatin on vocals, there’s an airy, nostalgic quality to their new Hindi song “Waqt,” which Pandit dedicates to his wife Kainaz.

Pandit, the celebrated mind behind the Nineties’ biggest songs sung by the likes of Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and more — from “Chaand Taare” (Yes Boss, 1997) to the title track from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 all the way to the rock-leaning “Chand Sifarish” from Fanaa in 2006 — brings a touch of lush modern pop to “Waqt” alongside Raahul Jatin’s familiar vocal harmonies.

The song goes out to the composer’s wife. He said in a statement, “We have a very beautiful relationship with each other. Even though our marriage is thirty-odd years old, our relationship is still fresh! My kids and my beautiful wife keep me positive, and help me keep going. They add colors to my life and that makes my life so very beautiful. I would like to declare that my wife is my life and I love her very much.”

The dedication is all in the family, with Raahul taking on the song for its “purity in composition and lyrics.” The singer adds in his statement, “The very first line of the song touches you, ‘Tere Sath Jitna Bhi Waqt Guzaaru Kam Hi Lage Hai mujhko Jitna Niharu.’ The thought itself is so beautiful that for me as a singer it was my job to bring that emotion and feel in my vocal performance and I did my best. The beauty of this song undoubtedly is the lyrics and the melody.”

Although it’s not their first father-son collaboration — they had “Madhoshiyaan” come out in 2022 — it does mark a solo release from Pandit after a while. His son added how working on “Waqt” was an important one. “This project is not just a song for me; it’s a profound connection to my roots, to my family, and to the timeless magic of music!  To work alongside my father, who has not only been my mentor but also my biggest inspiration in life is truly amazing,” Raahul said in a statement.
