The WE Concert is Set To Be Bigger and Better Than Ever

The seventh edition of the unique performance will feature sets across the genres of rock, pop, jazz, and more

What started off as a teenager’s brainchild for a backyard presentation in 2013 has since snowballed into an annual production. The WE concert, a performance music project organized by Mumbai-based musician/activist Mrinalini Somani and the NGO Salaam Bombay Foundation, takes place this Saturday, August 17th at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA in Mumbai. The annual concert harnesses the power of music to support the education of underprivileged children who attend the city-based Foundation’s many academies.

Started by Somani six years ago when she was still an adolescent, the musician/activist had both, musical affinity and a community-based outlook. The concert has since raised over a crore in funds, enabling 1,728 children to not only showcase their talent but also get into academies for dance, theater and musical training. The funds raised have been used to enable in-school leadership programs, after-school sports, arts, media academics and more. With the number of bands, vocalists and dancers only increasing over the years, many children have also found their calling in film, television and the media.

While last year’s edition of WE at Mumbai’s Royal Opera House featured a Hindustani/jazz fusion piece, four-part harmonies in Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” and an aerial dance act among other performances, the seventh edition of WE is all set to bring even more participants from the Foundation’s academies and the private schools of Mumbai to perform musical sets across the genres of rock, pop, jazz, classical, alternative, Bollywood and world music. After months of training with experts, the children will present a world-class spectacle of dance and music. The SOI (Symphony Orchestra of India) Academy Orchestra too will play at the concert.

The WE Concert will commence at 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 17th at Mumbai’s Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA. Email info@salaambombay.org to inquire about passes. Learn more about the WE Concert here.
