On their first release of the year, Mumbai-based Hindi alt-rock band Daira muse on illusions in their signature way with “Sab Dhuaan Hai.” Their new song comes with a music video directed by filmmaker Anuj Pratap Singh, which sees the band amidst locals and nature in and around the hill town of Manali.

The follow-up to their 2021 single “Mazaar” – and perhaps their last to feature drummer Pratik Kulgod who recently parted ways with the outfit – “Sab Dhuaan Hai ” plays out with vocalist Piyush Kapoor’s hair-raising croon. The singer and lyricist says in a statement about the song’s inspiration, “The recent past has been extremely thought-provoking and surreal for everyone, especially artists and creators. The song is an introspective and uncompromising desire to inspire our listeners to challenge their status quo and push their limits.”

On their own path – both in the video in Manali and metaphorically through the lyrics – Daira talks about how “insignificant” our desires and material possessions might be “in a grander scheme of things.”

Bassist Sourya Mukherjee adds, “This song has a calm, serene, thought-provoking aura. One might say that the raging aggression of some of our past work has paved the way for a more mellow, ambient sound. The lyrics of the song are also probably more relatable to the masses – seeing a shift from niche political commentary to [imbibing] a more philosophical, introspective reflection into our purpose, and what’s important and what’s not.” The song brings together frontman Kapoor, Mukherjee, guitarists Shivam Pant and Vikalp Sharma (both of whom aided production and mixing) and Kulgod, who left in October last year. In March, they announced Kolkata-bred drummer Shreyansh Kejriwal would be taking over behind the kit. With the new lineup secured, a multi-city India tour from June to July is slated to kick off soon.

“Sab Dhuaan Hai” is the first of three singles set to release this year from the Daira camp. It’s a new approach compared to the steady run they’ve had since releasing their debut self-titled album in 2015, followed by Vipreet Buddhi in 2017 and Itni Jurrat? in 2018.
