David Bowie’s Music Will Not Be Used In Musical

Singers representatives shoot down report in British paper

David Bowie’s management has denied a report in the British newspaper the Guardian claiming that the singer granted permission for the producers of Heroes: The Musical to use his songs in their show. “Neither the David Bowie Organization, nor its co-publishers EMI Music and Chrysalis, has issued a license for a Bowie musical at the O2, as has been reported in the U.K.,” Bowie’s representatives said in a statement. “There are no negotiations pending for a long-running musical featuring the music of Mr. Bowie.”

According to the Guardian, the musical was to include a variety of characters from the Bowie canon, including Major Tom, the Star Man, the Diamond Dogs and the “young dude” from “All the Young Dudes.” It is unclear why the show’s creators and producers believed that they had permission from Bowie, who very rarely allows his music to be used outside its original context.
