The singer-songwriter’s spoken word-employing song comes to life as an audio-visual offering shot and edited by New Delhi-based visual artist Venus Maku
Singer-songwriter Ditty aka Aditi Veena weaves evocative poetry and imagery in the music video for her latest song “Home in my Skin,” which you can watch exclusively before her new EP Skin drops on February 23rd.
While Ditty has used spoken word and poetic narration to powerful degrees on songs like “Sadness” and “Food City” on her 2019 album Poetry Ceylon, “Home in my Skin” gets an added dimension with a powerful visual filmed and edited by New Delhi-based Venus Maku and featuring choreography and movement by Akanksha Kumari, Aseng Borang, Jasmine Yadav and Pallavi Verma. In the video, Ditty shows (and narrates) her journey with her body, while intertwining just how connected our bodies are to the Earth. She says in a statement, “I realized that we treat the Earth body like our own. We find it hard to slow down and treat ourselves like machines in a capitalist patriarchal construct. It speaks about coming home to ourselves – how hard and beautiful that is. The song is my first take at production. Cello creates a vast lustrous soundscape over which voice meanders from spoken word to song.”
The latest visual follows her previous singles “Hold Me” and “Money,” which also came with videos, to drive home Ditty’s intent that Skin EP is an audio-visual record. For “Home in my Skin,” she says, “I think when I am moved deeply by the music I make, only then I find it possible to share it with the world. I wanted to create a visual to accompany the feeling when you heard the song. I’m really happy with what we were able to do.”
Made on a shoestring budget, Ditty says her creative inputs for the team working on the video was to play with the ideas of “skin, embracing oneself, touch, holding oneself and holding darkness.” In all, it’s the third and final single before Skin EP releases in its entirety tomorrow. Ditty is hosting a virtual, free listening party on February 23rd at 6:30 pm IST. She adds how the EP is a “love letter to the Earth” and “a reminder to remember where we come from, and an ally to hold oneself, our communities and our dear planet.” She says, “I’m looking forward to what it brings.”
