The special digital single is dedicated to their fandom, InSomnia
Celebrating their sixth group anniversary, Dreamcatcher – the face of rock in K-pop – have released a brand-new single. Titled “Reason,” the special digital track comes a week after the group released a slew of mystery codes teasing the song.
The evocative single blends the septet’s core sonic identity of a soaring rock soundscape with exceptional vocal prowess, ultimately giving rise to a tune that captures Dreamcatcher’s flair thoroughly. Written by frequent collaborators Leez and Ollounder, “Reason” conveys JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Handong, Yoohyeon, Dami and Gahyeon’s heartfelt gratitude to InSomnia (Dreamcatcher’s fandom) for sticking by them through the ups and downs they’ve experienced in the past six years. That gratitude is evident in lines like: “The key to sprint to high places/ We don’t fight/ I can see the light on our own path/ That is love or friendship.”
According to KoreaJoongAngDaily, the group broke down “Reason’s” storytelling via a press statement, explaining that the track “carries a message that Dreamcatcher sends to the fans, who have stuck by for six years from debut title “Chase Me” to the last release, ’’Vision.’” The septet continued: “It is also a promise that the group will spend more time with the fans.” The track also sees SuA switching gears and surprising listeners with her rap performance, a taste of which fans last had on the group’s 2017 single “Good Night.”
With a mix of animation and visual clips, the music video shows the group’s journey from debut till date. Peppered with heartfelt memories that the septet have created, we get to see them with their fans in various cities around the world, amuse each other backstage with their goofy personalities, burn the midnight oil, work their fingers to the bone in the practice room and, of course, celebrate the moment when they won their first music show win for their 2022 single “Maison.” It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and memories. On the other hand, the animation captures the group’s slow but steady rise to the top. Despite putting in the work and time to improve and grow with time, we see the group slowly succumb to exhaustion. Right before they surrender, a hand comes reaching down towards them, offering to make their journey easier. As you may have guessed, the hand represents their fandom, InSomnia.
Originally debuting as the five-member group titled Minx, Dreamcatcher have cemented themselves as one the few success stories that have greatly benefitted from a rigorous rebranding regime. In many ways, they are the textbook definition of perseverance. After bidding farewell to their bubblegum pop identity and adding two new members, they began their journey as the seven-member group Dreamcatcher. Underlined by their compelling dark-fantasy lore and commitment to popularizing rock in K-pop, the group debuted in 2017 with their first single album Nightmare and its title track, “Chase Me”. Since then, the group has built a solid global listenership of fans who enjoy an array of styles ranging from pop, rock to metal and more. From nightmares and the pitfalls of the digital age to expressing the dangers of climate change, Dreamcatcher continue to highlight pressing societal issues without compromising their core sonic identity. It’s a practice that has helped them build a loyal fanbase, especially outside of Korea.
