Though there have been many great international women drummers such as Sandy West from the American all-female rock band The Runaways and Meg White from rock duo The White Stripes, Indian women percussionists have been farfetched.  But there’s more in number than thought, and a showcase gig called Women of Rhythm seeks to change that.

Set to be held on December 15th at the YB Chavan Auditorium in Mumbai, Women of Rhythm will be the first of three shows in the country. “The focus is on women empowerment,” says organizer Aditya Prabhu.

Set to perform tomorrow are six artists who are masters at their craft. Tabla players Anuradha Pal and Rimpa Siva, mridangam artist Dandamudi Sumathi Ramamohan Rao, ghatam master Sukkanya Ramgopal, Chitrangana Agle Reshwal who plays the pakhawaj and drummer Shiksha Bali are on the bill. Each artist will lead off with a solo 30-minute set, closing with an all star jam.

Women of Rhythm will also travel to Bengaluru in March and Goa in May. Tickets for tomorrow’s concert are priced at Rs.150, Rs.300 and Rs.1000 for corporate bulk booking.
