Eccentric Pendulum Announce New Album ‘Perspectiva Invertalis’

The Bengaluru prog metallers will return to the stage this week for the first time since 2020, supporting American death metal band Suffocation and Chennai’s Moral Putrefaction on May 1st

Bengaluru progressive metal band Eccentric Pendulum are back in action with the announcement of their new album Perspectiva Invertalis, slated to release in September this year.

The band – comprising bassist Arun Natarajan, guitarists Ankit Suryakanth, Arjun Mulky and Ashish Kumar and drummer Vibhas Venkatram – say they restarted during the pandemic lockdowns. The seven-track album, their first release since 2017’s EP Tellurian Concepts, has been in the works for as long as their 2011 record Winding The Optics and their appearance at Wacken Open Air in Germany that year, being the first band to win the India leg of band competition Wacken Metal Battle. Natarajan says, “It took a lot of time and capital to conclude the album, but it is done now, which meant we had to reboot playing live no matter what, to tour in support of the album.”

Eccentric Pendulum will play their first gig since 2020 on May 1st at Bengaluru WL Superclub, on the bill with American death metallers Suffocation and Chennai death metal band Moral Putrefaction (who are also launching their self-titled album in May). While vocalist Kaushal L.S. (from Hyderabad death metallers Godless and Bengaluru experimental metallers Maneating Orchid) is on a “temporary break” (Natarajan adds as subtext, “We would like to think [that]”), the bassist has taken over vocals on Perspectiva Invertalis and have brought in Stanley David from metal band Among The Signs on vocals as a live member.

The band calls Kaushal’s contribution – on Tellurian Concepts and their 2015 single “Resisting Another Equation” –  as “top notch” and say they “will miss his contributions.” For Natarajan taking over vocals on the album which already had lyrics eked out for over a decade, he says he was “singing against the song” in terms of technique. “Producing it yourself is a nice challenge too,” he adds. The album also features French death metal band Benighted’s drummer Kevin Paradis as a session artist, with German drummer Hannes Grossman (from Natarajan’s metal project Moral Collapse) also on one track. “We had to get the album done and done real fast, so we took aggressive measures to complete it,” the band says.

Guitarists like Kumar has been a longstanding contributor in Eccentric Pendulum, as has Suryakanth adding solos. “Playing live now, I think it will return us to the feeling of being onstage as a unit, an old and experienced unit,” Natarajan says.

The band intends to bring out old and some new material at their gig this week. They plan to add more gigs as they near the September release. “We would try and tour as much as possible to promote the new album, we are looking to come to your city, real soon,” the band says.
