Ex Bicycle Days’ frontman Karthik Basker’s new electronica project will also make its stage debut this month
Back in January, Bengaluru psychedelic/alternative band The Bicycle Days announced they would go on an “indefinite break,” with members planning to take up other projects. Frontman Karthik Basker said he would release his own solo material and an EP with Klypp ”“ his electronica side project with Bengaluru psychedelic/chill out producer Faheem Hasan aka Avilente. Three months on, Klypp is finally ready with their debut four-track EP, Manifest, which releases online on April 3rd.
Klypp was formed much before The Bicycle Days went on a break, after an informal start in June 2013 when Basker and Hasan, a former guitarist of prog metal band Eccentric Pendulum, met at a workshop conducted by British electronica DJ State of Bengal. Says Hasan, “Karthik and I have known each other for two years now. We’ve jammed before.” It was only in December that the duo met to compose tracks, with Basker providing vocals and guitars and Hasan handling additional guitars, synth, backing vocals and production. Says Basker of Klypp’s sound, “It’s got elements of downtempo. When we started writing, he [Hasan] had a few songs, I had a few songs and we put them together. That’s how it happened. It’s not exactly a vocalist collaborating with a producer. The thing about electronica is that you record first and then play it back to see if it works. So we were messing about.” On Manifest, Klypp showcase an upbeat sound with elements of glitch and chill out over Basker’s calm vocals.
The duo have already started working on a live set, even though an EP launch gig is yet to be confirmed. Hasan adds that including the four tracks off Manifest, the duo have at least 15 tracks at various stages of production. Following the release of Manifest, the duo also plan to release a music video for the opening track “Be,” and Basker says the duo “should start gigging by April.”
