Filmmakers Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga accepted the Academy Award in Los Angeles earlier today
India received an early cheer at the 95th Academy Awards, with The Elephant Whisperers picking up the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film.
The poignant tale of Bomman and Belli and their bond with an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu has been celebrated across the world and in India for several months now and the Netflix documentary’s win at the Oscars cements its critical and audience acclaim.
Producer Guneet Monga and filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves took the stage at the Oscars in Los Angeles earlier today, with the producer hailing this as the “first ever Oscar for an Indian production.” Monga highlighted the importance of the win as two women in the film industry. “To all the women watching, the future is audacious and the future is here,” she said on Instagram.
The other contenders from India at the Oscars this year include All That Breathes, which is nominated for Documentary Feature Film, while the megahit RRR‘s song “Naatu Naatu” is also nominated for Best Original Song.
