Emmy Nominations 2024: ‘The Bear’ and ‘Shōgun’ Lead
Shōgun, The Crown, The Bear, and Abbott Elementary will all vie for top prizes this year
The Bear and Shōgun dominated as the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday, July 17.
Shōgun, the smash historical drama based on James Clavell’s 1975 book of the same name, led all nominees with 25, including nods for Outstanding Drama Series and acting nomination for stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, and Takehiro Hira.
Shōgun will compete for Outstanding Drama Series against past winner The Crown, as well as The Morning Show, Slow Horses and The Gilded Age, all of which just picked up their first Outstanding Drama Series nods. Several new shows were nominated as well: Fallout, Mr. And Mrs. Smith, and 3 Body Problem.
Meanwhile, The Bear picked up 23 nominations — a new record for the most nominations in a single year in the Comedy categories. The show will try to win its second straight Outstanding Comedy Series award, while stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will all look to repeat in the acting categories they won at the 7th Emmys. Capping it all off, Liza Colón-Zayas picked up her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy.
In the Outstanding Comedy Series category, The Bear will compete against Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, What We Do in the Shadows, and Reservation Dogs.
In the Limited or Anthology Series category, True Detective: Night Country led all nominees with 19, including lots for stars Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, and John Hawkes. Baby Reindeer also picked up 11 nominations, notably just a few weeks after the woman on whom the character Martha is based filed a $50 million lawsuit over the show. True Detective and Baby Reindeer will compete against Fargo, Lessons in Chemistry, and Ripley for the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series prize.
Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale announced the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards. Both hosts have received Emmys in the past: Ralph won the prize for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy in 2022 for her work on Abbott Elementary, while Hale twice won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his work on Veep in 2013 and 2015.
The 76th Emmy Awards will be held on Sept. 15, airing live on ABC from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. And, if you’re thinking, “Weren’t the Emmys just a few months ago?” Yes, the 75th Primetime Emmys were held back in January, bumped from their usual September slot because of the then-ongoing Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes.
