India’s oldest band hunt Livewire returns this year with a bigger agenda ”“ to promote ”˜gig culture’ across India. One of the flagship events at Mood Indigo, IIT Bombay’s annual cultural festival, Livewire has seen the likes of Pentagram, Goddess Gagged and The F16s as past winners.
This year, Livewire invites participation from English semi-professional bands, having at least one recorded original composition, and is also introducing eligibility for instrumental bands. In the first round, bands from all over the country will be judged based on the song(s) they send in online, as judged by an internal panel. The top five bands from each city will be chosen and will battle it out at regional gigs in their respective city (or a neighboring city) over these next two months.
The regional gigs will see Livewire travel to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi””and for the first time””Shillong and Pune. The five selected bands representing each of these cities will then battle it out in a gig-style environment, as opposed to the event’s competitive setting. Two bands will then be chosen from each regional gig to perform at the semi-finals on “day zero” of Mood Indigo. Finally, the top three bands will go on to play the Livewire Nite at Mood Indigo, which in the past has witnessed audiences of 20,000-strong people. Says Siddhant Gandhi, Concerts Head at Mood Indigo, “With Livewire our main aim is to promote the indie scene, to change the format every year according to how the indie scene is progressing.”
