EVNNE’s fourth mini-album, Hot Mess, celebrates all aspects of life, including the beautiful and otherwise—the unpleasant, the messy, and the things in between. In a musically varied portrayal of that, this album departs from the style of EVNNE’s earlier albums, concentrating on a more relaxed, chill side of the band while embracing the beauty of taking life as it is. Note that while more meticulously executed dance routines have been central to EVNNE’s songs until now, “Hot Mess,” the title track of the newly released record, is showing a refreshingly “free-spirited” and “laid-back” attitude of dancing. In the words of Yoo Seungeon, one of the members who participated in writing the lyrics, the group’s intention with this latest album is to demonstrate its ability to “savor and enjoy all situations and experiences, even the messy ones.”

Anecdotally, “Sowing” and “Splatter” are the two essential themes of this album, with “Splatter” depicting the band members striding and enjoying themselves in colorful surroundings, a visual metaphor for enjoying life. On the flip side, “Sowing” connotes an easygoing EVNNE and its ability to stay calm and be patient regardless of unforeseen chaotic circumstances, much like a gardener caring for plants while navigating challenges toward what is wanted. From the dynamic pop-rock of the album’s title track, “Hot Mess,” to the more reflective tones of “Youth” and the Korean version of the previously released Japanese digital single “景色 (Keshiki),” the album’s diverse music underscores this duality.

Playing an integral role in Hot Mess’s lyrical development, Yoo Seungeon and bandmate Park Jihoo have given the songs, which also include “Birthday,” “Love Like That,” and “Crown”—the essence of going with the flow while making peace with the messy. EVNNE leader Keita, who also wrote and composed “景色 (Keshiki),” says, “If you’re curious about how much fun we can have in the middle of a messy situation through this album, I suggest listening to our new tracks.”

“Hot Mess” in its music video well encapsulates the album’s underlying concepts, skillfully blending the realms of reality and abstraction. With its emotional crescendo, the visuals express the song’s vibrant and unapologetic spirit. Member Ji Yunseo’s thoughtful input into the lyrics of “Love Like That” beautifully highlights EVNNE’s charm and its unique artistry.

The song “Youth” comes with evocative lyrics penned by Seungeon, a dynamic fusion of rock-based guitar riffs, and Wobble Synth that sort of creates a surge of emotions. The track powerfully conveys that the moments of crashing and breaking are not just commonplace but are essential facets of youth and life itself, emphasizing that these challenges are integral to the journey of self-discovery and ultimately lead to realizing one’s dreams.

Rounding off Hot Mess, it’s essentially a celebration of letting go and embracing every moment, even during challenging times. As EVNNE keeps evolving, the album emerges as a bold and refreshing statement. It highlights the beauty that can be discovered in the unpredictable and messy parts of life, showcasing EVNNE’s inclination to explore new creative horizons.
