After months of speculation about their much-awaited India show, U2 have finally confirmed they are coming to India this December for their first-ever show here. In an exclusive chat with Rolling Stone India at the Electric Lady Studios in New York, lead singer Bono and guitarist The Edge expressed their excitement at the prospect of performing in Mumbai on December 15th.

“It will be such a thrill,” said Bono. “We became U2 not through our records but through our shows and concerts, and the Mumbai show will be a big moment. And there is a whole Irish-India thing! We have the same colors in the flag, our tiny little nation — Mahatma Gandhi commented on the struggle for Irish independence and warned against the violent struggle… And our prime minister, he’s a physician — he’s trained in Mumbai, his father’s from Mumbai. It’s just these kinds of links… Also, the Irish constitution influenced the Indian constitution…”

U2’s Mumbai show will also mark the final date of the legendary Joshua Tree tour, which has been running successfully for over 32 years since the album released in 1987. The record features some of the Irish rock band’s most memorable songs such as “With Or Without You,” “Where The Streets Have No Name” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” It was with Joshua Tree that the band, which apart from Bono and The Edge, features bassist Adam Clayton and drummer/percussionist Larry Mullen Jr, won their first two Grammys.

When asked what took them so long to come to India, The Edge explained it was mostly due to production-related concerns. “In the past, there have been many logistical issues that prevented it, but we were just so determined on this occasion to figure it out.” The U2 show is brought to India by BookMyShow, the online ticketing giant which also put together the Ed Sheeran Divide Tour (2017) and Bryan Adams concert (2018), among others. Promising an immersive experience for the audience, this finale is produced by Live Nation, the American concert promoters who have decades-long history of working on U2 tours.

Bono added, “We feel that a lot of people have made this [happen]. Our shows have been quite technical over the years. In order to break down the distance between the band and the audience, we have developed certain technologies and transporting those technologies can end up putting up the ticket price. And we were very conscious of putting up the ticket prices in India.”

The tickets for the Mumbai show start at Rs 3,000 and they will be available on www.bookmyshow.com and www.livenation.com on October 1 at 12 pm. Apart from the maiden India date, the U2: The Joshua Tree Tour 2019 will also see the band play debut concerts in  Singapore, Seoul and Manila.
