Exclusive Premiere: Composer Advait Sawant and Vocalist Anmol Basnett’s Cinematic ‘Chase’

The duo, who met at music school, draw from trip-hop and electronica

Sharing their common love for artists such as Trent Reznor, trip-hop duo Massive Attack and prog/alt multi-instrumentalist Steven Wilson, Mumbai-based composer Advait Sawant and Bengaluru-based vocalist-guitarist Anmol Basnett craft a futuristic, sweeping electronica track called “Chase.”

Sawant — who has helmed music production and background score work for the movie Baaghi 3 and OTT series such as Criminal Justice and Out of Love‘s second season — previously released singles like “Itkese” in 2020 and “Death With Dignity” earlier this year. He’s also put out Marathi songs like “Naav Moryache Mukhi” and “Pandharichi Vaari,” which indicates quite a range even with his solo material. “My emphasis is to not be stuck with any particular genre and keep experimenting with different styles of music,” Sawant says.

Built from a keys motif that flows throughout the track, Sawant called on Basnett (who studied together at Mumbai’s True School of Music) to add vocals. Additional vocals were also provided by Sama Thakore. Basnett says about his involvement, “When Advait sent me the early demos it was more thematic compared to anything I had tried before.” Going with the “spacey vibe” that “Chase” gave him, the artist name-checks experimental/electronic/trip-hop artists like Portishead and Bjork as a leading sonic reference. “All that was left was to pour in introspective thoughts and questions running on my mind at that time. Particularly the underlying intentions behind things we aspire to achieve or rather what a modern life wants us to,” he adds.

The duo have more demos and ideas they’re planning to work on next. Meanwhile, Sawant has more music compositions coming out for OTT films and shows. He adds, “Apart from that, I have two singles ready for release and another collaboration with Anmol happening soon.”

Listen to “Chase” below. The song is out on streaming platforms on June 25th.
