Exclusive Premiere: Ambient Artist Eashwar Subramanian’s Enchanting ‘Broken Mirrors’

The Bengaluru-based producer unveils the first single off his new album ‘Polar Drift’

It’s only been about six months since the release of his debut album Ambient Hamlet, but Bengaluru-based producer Eashwar Subramanian has been on a prolific streak. Just one look at his SoundCloud page shows tons of ambient pieces as well as demo collections.

He says it’s not intentional to produce so much music. “For me creating music everyday has been a meditative experience and gives me an oasis to escape into after a long day at work,” Subramanian, a market intelligence professional, says. The producer particularly cites his mentor, keyboardist, pianist and composer Vivek Santosh as one who taught him to see the keyboard “as an extension of me and a good conversationalist.”

The artist has now set aside six tracks for his latest record, Polar Drift, which releases tomorrow. Intending to take listeners “across a spectrum of emotions,” there’s Eastern and Indian classical instrumentation that melds into easygoing ambient passages. “In the case of Polar Drift, the emotions get darker with each piece, which by the way was unintentional,” Subramanian says. The closing track “Broken Mirrors,” for example, sounds conclusive in a sense, with tanpura and tabla samples that are influenced by new age producers such as Grammy winner Ricky Kej, sitarist Niladri Kumar and producer-multi-instrumentalist Karsh Kale. Subramanian adds, “I guess the future for Indian ambient music lies in creating immersive sonic landscape by harnessing the power of Indian ragas to create music that is true to its roots and interesting enough to be adopted by future generations.”
