Although singer-songwriter Deepak Kamboj flirted with music when he was in college in his native Dehradun, it was only when he moved to Stockholm for work that he started taking it seriously. “I started to learn guitar on my own and it became a regular activity,” he says. Kamboj also began performing for the Indian Consulate in Stockholm and in 2018 he began to focus on music production and is now out with his debut single, the ballad “Tera Hissa.”

“Tera Hissa” – which means part of your life – is a love song dedicated to the musician’s wife Supriya. “This is my small attempt to make her feel special and I hope she does,” says Kamboj. The track features guitar and piano elements as well as rabab parts. There’s vocal harmonies by Kamboj, which is something he enjoys creating. He says, “Maybe my next project could be a fully harmonized one.”

Initially, Kamboj wanted to shoot a music video across Europe to accompany the song, however, due to COVID-19 his plans went out the window. Instead, the singer-songwriter decided to go with an animated lyric video to complement the track. The clip features prominent places in Stockholm and also Kamboj and his wife sharing special moments with one another. The artist collaborated with illustrator Devanshi Chitalia whom he discovered on Rolling Stone India’s #RSDailyMusic roundup. He says, “She made my visions into reality and started it all from scratch and drafted so many versions but finally, we both came with the version I wanted.”

Kamboj recorded the song at his home studio in Stockholm while Ludhiana-based Gourav Azad arranged, mixed and mastered it.

The singer-songwriter has not used the pandemic to work on music, but instead has spent more time with his family and his newly born second child. “Being close to family and working from home and having no lockdown [in Sweden] was a bit easy compared to what the rest of the world was going through,” he says.

Next on the musician’s agenda is to turn his home studio setup into a much larger one than he currently has and also install a vocal booth. Kamboj is also readying a second single which will be a Punjabi offering that he first wrote as a poem in high school. For his third song, the artist plans on collaborating with Swedish musicians based in Stockholm. “Mostly it will be an English ballad,” he says.
