After releasing an intense, technique-heavy opening statement with their 2017 debut EP Terraform, Bengaluru metallers Kaihon evolved from a two-person bedroom project to a well-rounded band and slowly began gigging as well. Founder and guitarist Jude Mascarenhas says their latest release “Bounce” was written just around then and it shows an intentional change in focus.

The guitarist adds, “I think on the previous EP, I was trying to prove a point and prioritized technicality and complexity over musicality. With Bounce and a lot of our newer stuff, I am just trying to write a good and catchy song. Those are pretty much the goalposts.” Currently comprising Mascarenhas, vocalist Vineet Roy, co-guitarist Shantanu Chakravorty, drummer Aranyak Das, bassist Adithyashankar Ajith and newly joined keyboardist/synth player Abhishek Daniel, Kaihon are at their playful, heavy metal shredding, buoyant best on “Bounce.”

Mascarenhas notes that the song – recorded at Bengaluru’s Third Eye Recording Studio and The Music School – is about drawing people out of self-pity, lethargy and self-doubt. There are three more songs expected from the Kaihon camp later this year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has understandably made them put their plans on hold. “Being stuck at home has definitely gotten us a little stir-crazy. With the world turning into a sinkhole, we thought we’d put this song out there to lift our spirits and hopefully boost the morale of others too,” Mascarenhas says.
