When Dimapur-based pop-rock band Trance Effect formed in 2017, their goal was simple, to never become the Eighties rock band clones, aping what’s popular around their region. The group seems to have ticked all the boxes in having a modern sonic imprint with their latest single, the soaring “New Beginning.” Says drummer Sosang Lkr, “The idea that was actually mooted and kept us going was the possibility of making music as a band that would reach out to a younger generation.”

Trance Effect, comprising Lkr, vocalist Iuli Yeptho, guitarist Tako Chang and bassist Imnamaong Imchen released their dancey debut single “Stop Pretending” last year. The band’s latest offering is a step above their previous song and much more polished. The track includes a shimmering guitar riff and solo, a controlled groove and some sublime vocal parts by Yeptho.

Imchen says, “’New Beginning’ is a song about letting go of the past flaws in life.” He adds, “The song talks about a person being haunted by the past and later culminating it into a beautiful story of leaving the past behind and following the trails of a new beginning in life.” The band recorded it at Dimapur guitarist Nash Lkr’s bedroom studio, where it was also mixed and mastered.

Trance Effect is currently working on their debut EP and also has festival slots lined up at this month’s Dimapur Music Festival and Ziro Festival of Music at Ziro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh. On what people can expect from their performances, Lkr says, “We try to reflect a positive message to our listeners from our songs and through our lyrics.”
