Exclusive Premiere: Hear Post-Rock Duo Bicurious’ Emphatic New Single ‘Deconstructed’

You know you’re doing something right and genre-spanning with your music when the playlists pair you with stoner-rock, blues, math-rock and even tunes for cycling. Irish/French post-rock duo Bicurious – Dublin-bred drummer Gavin Purcell and Brest, France-origin guitarist Taran Plouzané – have been doing just that since 2016.

As Purcell puts it, they want to be the accessible band for those who may not be counting time signatures and geeking out on pedalboard setups. “One of our aims is to get people who aren’t ‘math rock nerds’ to listen to our music and that’s happening which is really cool. I love the nerds but it’s nice to have other people listen to your music who aren’t really in that scene,” he says.

Best known for tracks like “I Don’t Do Drugs, I Just Sweat a Lot” and “Sleep,” the duo are now prepping to release their debut full-length album (re)constructed on July 30th. Following the high-energy, sing-along tune “Palapalapa,” Bicurious are out with “Deconstructed,” an equally charged up yet emotive rollercoaster ride. Compared to their first single off the nine-track album, “Deconstructed” is definitely darker but still drives at a sense of catharsis.

The album and this track draw from a “psychotic episode” that Purcell had about three years ago, as well as the birth of Plouzané’s son Ezra. Purcell adds, “The album goes through the highs and lows during that time. ‘Deconstructed’ is when stuff starts to get chaotic and more dark.” The song was fully written during the start of the coronavirus pandemic and was finished up in a couple of days. Plouzané adds, “I was listening to a lot of [Irish instrumental rock band] And So I Watch You From Afar at the time, which I think really influenced that lead part. I also really dig the groove and lead guitar part in the second verse.”

“Deconstructed” is accompanied by a video that’s directed, shot and edited by Shane Serrano from film and video production company Crude.ie, featuring all kinds of apt action, executed with total abandonment. With the album release next month, Bicurious also have select festival dates coming up in Europe and the U.K.. Purcell says about returning to the stage, “At our first show back there will be someone in the audience pointing at Taran’s pedal board going “look at the size of that” and hopefully there will be some lovely friendly mosh pits. I just can’t wait to play live again, I miss everything about it.”
