Not the kind to miss a chance for a joke, Mumbai guitarist Jatin Talukdar points out with a chuckle that his latest single “Divergent Theory” was born out of “divergent thinking,” considering it was the first time he was turning his solo project into a band.

The rock and metal guitarist, who has been writing and releasing music for more than five years, enlisted bassist Shawn Phulpagar (from death metallers Atmosfear) and drummer Aritra Basu (from Kolkata prog band Yonsample) for his live debut earlier this year. Both members later agreed to be part of the band beyond just performing live. Talukdar says about the writing process, “I presented the overall arrangement to my band members in one of the jams, and they loved it at the first instance only. I then mailed the guitar parts, and Shawn and Aritra came up with insane ideas. After a few passes and a lot of brain storming, we then had the final product which was more than what I had expected.” Talukdar also says he got suggestions from guitarist Nishith Hegde and bassist-producer Ashwin Shriyan (formerly of extreme metallers Demonic Resurrection and currently part of prog band The Minerva Conduct).

Compared to singles released over the last two years ”“ including his collaboration with violinist-producer Ajay Jayanthi on “Escapsism” ”“ Talukdar says “Divergent Theory” turned his focus to more than just guitar solos. There’s riffs aplenty and the occasional breakdown, which makes his latest the heaviest one yet. “I kept every song like a benchmark for the next song. That was quite challenging,” Talukdar says.

The Jatin Talukdar Project goes live once again, performing their new material at metal gig series Blackblood in Mumbai on August 26th, alongside experimental metallers Noiseware (featuring their new drummer Sambit Chatterjee, from Kolkata metallers What Escapes Me), thrash metallers Sceptre, death metallers Atmosfear, black metal act Stark Denial and eclectic metal band Festacorn.
