Exclusive Premiere: Letters’ Emphatic New Single ‘Toad’

The Mumbai instrumental/progressive metal band get mind-bending on their latest offering

Published by

Around five years ago Mumbai-based producer and recording engineer Tejas Narayan started messing around with sonic ideas related to metal, taken in by prog groups such as Meshuggah, TesseracT and Textures, among others. “I just started recording some lines and I had no intention of doing anything about it or sharing it with the world. I just wanted to make it for myself and I just kept it,” says Narayan.

After guitarist Asxem D’lean heard some of Narayan’s material, he forced the producer into turning this into a full-fledged live act called Letters. “For the last two years, we basically went through finding a whole lot of people,” says Narayan. Letters now comprises Narayan, D’lean, guitarist Shannon George, bassist Adil Kurwa and drummer Aritra Basu. The group released their debut single “Microchip Cookie” earlier this year and with their latest single “Toad,” they showcase even more sonic agility.

The new single came together after Narayan wrote a fiery riff that you hear in the second half of the scintillating song. He says, “I just wanted it to be a little more metal.” The instrumental proficiency on the track recalls the likes of Cloudkicker, Meshuggah and more, “We’ve been jamming for almost a year trying to get all these parts down because it is really technical stuff.” The song was recorded and mixed by Narayan at his home studio and mastered by New Delhi’s Keshav Dhar.

The band is currently speaking to venues on possible gigs and also plan on releasing more singles in the coming months. “Hopefully by the end of the year we will release an EP,” Narayan says.
