An enticing recipe video for chocolate ganache cake is at the center of Mumbai band Madmast’s new single “Aaj Phir Tera.”

Frontman and founder Vaibhav Sharma tells us that the idea to shoot a visual accompaniment in the style of an artful food video came from his wife. Sharma adds, “I love to cook and bake. If you follow the video, you’ll get the cake.” Initially intended to be shot strictly as a recipe video by production house Semicolon Films, Madmast decided to bring in an actor to narrate a story of an old-school romantic who’s baking a cake in anticipation of his date. “The idea was to take a guy who looks badass and make him do sweet things,” Sharma says with a laugh.

Sonically, Sharma says “Aaj Phir Tera” originated while composing in raag Khamaj but took off in another direction. “It went into that Sixties and Seventies Bollywood pop sound. My imagination got into that zone. I also used the kind of lyrics often found in old school Bollywood,” he adds. The song brings together a seemingly swing rhythm, plus kazoo and carefree vocal melodies.

The playful, anticipatory song is the second single by Madmast, who came together in 2017 and released their debut single “Ae Dil” in July this year. It sees the band explore a lighter side compared to the openhearted “Ae Dil.” All part of their upcoming album Gumshuda Ki Talaash, Madmast will shift moods again with their next song, described by Sharma as a heavy track. It’s set for release later this month to mark the anniversary of India’s demonetization of erstwhile 500 and 1,000-rupee notes.
