Exclusive Premiere: L.A./Mumbai Artist Nikitaa’s Shimmering Electro-Rock Tune ‘Universe’

The pop singer also directed the DIY music video for her latest song

Mumbai-bred, Los Angeles-based pop/R&B singer Nikitaa proves that you can write a meaningful song about companionship even if you’re single. The latest track “Universe” is the artist’s way of talking about the blossoming of a romance. Releasing officially on October 16th, you can watch the self-directed music video for the rock-infused “Universe” exclusively below.

Although Nikitaa turned to regular collaborator and fellow L.A.-based producer Mukund Komanduri, there’s an assist from producer Aaron Zepeda and more interestingly, lyrics from seasoned London-based artist Ash King. Nikitaa says she and Ash wanted to “capture the feeling of a vast and deep love with the writing.” In a typically sublime R&B-meets-pop croon, Nikitaa woos a potential partner with the offer of starting a universe together, going over seductive beats and rock riffs.

Nikitaa says about the track, “Even though it’s this grand love song, I was single when I wrote it! I was drawing both from a specific past experience and also what I imagined it would feel like whenever I felt that way again.” Describing it as her first ever love song, “Universe” follows releases such as “Goddess,” “Exodus,” “Clutch” and “Majesty,” with the singer-songwriter starting out in 2018.

The music video for “Universe” was directed and produced by Nikitaa in lockdown, showcasing a glimmering side to the artist as she almost portrays herself as a goddess, keeping in line with the visual and sonic aesthetic of her recent material. There’s more singles ready for release in 2020 and we’re likely to further explore the thematic world of this rising voice.
