Last month, Guwahati metallers Silver Tears began teasing their new release with illustrated visuals and the tag “Excessive Pigeon Violence.” Their latest song and music video “New Day” lifts the veil on the intriguing hints, with its videogame-inspired visuals and euphoric instrumental prog songwriting.

The plot for “New Day”, whose music video is created by Siddhanth Purkayashta, Pranjeevan Adhikary and Bhargab Phukan at Pek Studios, stemmed from the animators’ “shared distrust of pigeons.” They add in a joint statement, “In the video, our character tries to escape from his mundane reality into the virtual world but, what if this new place is even more awful than his reality… with a heck load of mean pigeons.”

Since their school days, the video makers are self-professed fans of Silver Tears, with the band making a return in 2020 on the studio front with the song “Miseries.” Purkayashta, Adhikary and Phukan add, “This is our first full-length music video. Animating with a small team of three with limited time is a mad experience, but a big shoutout to the people behind [computer graphics software] Blender for making things possible.”

Sonically, Silver Tears lean on the sound of modern prog bands such as Plini, Intervals and more. The single arrives just as they announced a change in personnel. Bassist and co-founder Biswajit Chakroborty has since quit the band and Rahul Putai now takes on bass duties. “New Day” is produced by Ishan Das and mixed and mastered by Mumbai-based Akash Sawant. Putai adds, “This is my first song with the band and the icing on the cake is it being an instrumental one. We’ve poured our heart and good thoughts for this.”
