It was only a few months ago when Mumbai singer-songwriter Mallika Mehta released her endearing single “Way Too Long.” Without wasting much time, the musician is following the song up with her brand-new offering, the wistful “Kahan Hai Tu.”

Mehta penned the song during one of her midnight writing sessions when she usually sits with her keyboard. She says, “‘Kahan Hai Tu’ is all about craving, missing, longing and waiting for the one you love.” The track opens with the sound of thunder and rain which according to Mehta puts the listener in a mood of yearning for someone. The melancholic song then incorporates pop melodies and subtle production.

Although the vocalist has sung in Hindi before and even has a reprise version of her song, “War Solo,” from her 2019 EP Evolve: The Story of Her, this is the first time she’s written completely in the language. She says, “It falls under a new territory for me.” Mehta adds, “I never thought I’d write and release a Hindi single so soon, I thought it would still take me a while to write one since I had never tried that out but it just happened.” “Kahan Hai Tu” has been produced by Shivang Arora while Aasa Singh mixed and mastered it.

The musician tells us that she desperately misses performing live with an audience in front of her. However, until things get back to normal again, Mehta is using the time to keep writing new music and also sharpen her keyboard skills. The artist is also planning on experimenting with her sound which she wants to integrate on future releases. “I personally think I’m in the songwriting space right now,” says Mehta.
