Exclusive Premiere: Subhi Offers Dreamy Pop on ‘Define Me’
The Indo-American singer-songwriter marks the release of her debut English EP, also called ‘Define Me’

It was in October last year that Chicago/New York/Mumbai artist Subhi released her debut English single “In My Way.” Now, she’s out with “Define Me,” the title track that rounds off her first ever EP featuring English songs.
The dream-pop track is produced by Los Angeles songwriter/producer Taylor Sparks and features a music video directed by Lyle Lindale, in which we see Subhi on a sofa building her vocals up from a half-whisper to an emphatic croon. She says the song is about “building the courage to take a step back, make a mistake or two in an attempt to define who I am. With this song, I learnt to take risks. No one is born with all the truth inside them. We discover. We grow. In this process, we learn to be the best version of ourselves.”
She describes releasing the five-track Define Me as liberating. “Being an Indian-American, I have always had this inner conflict of where I belong. For years, I resisted releasing my English songs. This past year I realized that I need to be true to who I am and let the world see me. This EP tells the story of my evolution as an artist and an individual,” she says.
Another life development during the course of the EP was Subhi’s pregnancy, which she says gave her a “heightened sense of purpose that is reflected in the stories” on the record. Subhi adds, “These past few months have been my most productive months; I recorded five songs, created three music videos, did two photoshoots, took part in two international sync camps, and planned my debut EP release”
There’s a three-month maternity break in the coming months, but Subhi assures that “work will continue in the background.” She adds, by July, Subhi is plotting three English singles, including a co-write called “Better” with fellow Indo-American artist Natania Lalwani. “Lots of other things planned in the pipeline as well including collaborations with India-based artists for my audience to look out for,” Subhi adds.
