Exclusive Premiere: Undying Inc’s Roaring Return on ‘Glock’

It’s been a whirlwind year in New Delhi metallers Undying Inc’s camp – it was only in June last year that they announced their new bassist Ezra Helios was joining the fold but by May this year, vocalist Shashank Bhatnagar and drummer Nishant Hagjer quit the band citing differences.

But despite the changes, guitarist and founder Biswarup Gupta agrees that new personnel like vocalist Sunneith Revankar (previously from Mumbai metallers Bhayanak Maut) and drummer Jerry Nelson Ranee (who plays guitars for recently formed metal group The Silent Offensive) have been a “huge catalyst.” Three months after Revankar and Ranee joined, Undying Inc has released their long-awaited new song “Glock.” Gupta adds, “Honestly speaking, it was a huge relief as we have been tying to get this song out for a long time now.”

Their first single since 2017’s “Alpha Absolute,” the members changed up a few parts in the song and sent it over to recording engineer Justin Paul Hill (formerly co-vocalist at U.K. metallers SikTh) to mix and master. Hill had also worked on “Alpha Absolute,” which featured then-bassist Carl Dawkins.

“Glock” snakes through Gupta’s complex guitar melodies and riffs, bringing together unrelenting rhythm work from Helios and Ranee (whom Gupta says made quite a lot of changes from parts originally programmed by Hagjer) and Revankar’s frantic-paced delivery. While it’s Revankar’s first release in a few years, he was operating with the intention of standing true to Undying Inc’s heaviness. He says, “The moment I heard the first few parts of the song for the first time, I knew there was a lot for me to bring to the table. It’s an absolute banger of a track. The writing process took about two weeks. The lyrics, simply put are about a skewed, uneven fight.”

The song has refrains like “Click click boom motherfucker” from the very start and the vocalist says the aim was to create hooks. “I may go as far as saying that this is Biz’s best work yet. I didn’t want my vocals to overlap the instruments without merit. So I took to syncopated vocal patterns for a lot of the parts in the song while leaving some parts alone.”

Currently, there’s more material in the works but no plans for a gig with the new lineup just yet. Gupta says, “Our main concentration right now is to write a smashing heavy metal album, then we can start thinking about gigs.”
