New Delhi rock artist Amrit Mohan channels signature grunge and a hint of blues on a song off his recently released EP ‘Portrait of Dali’
Who still owns a CRT TV from the Nineties? The answer is New Delhi rock band Mocaine’s frontman Amrit Mohan, as evident on their new video “Left Leg.”
The vocalist, guitarist and composer for Mocaine, which started out in 2015, says about his prized possession, “It’s an actual ’93 L.G. TV. I hunted it down. Most of the shows I watch are from the early Eighties and Nineties and a lot of them are shot in PAL (video format), so it makes sense to watch them on this TV.”
Decidedly against the trend of high-definition videos shot in 4K resolution, “Left Leg” ”“ directed by Mohan ”“ is hazy and effect-fed to reflect the grunge aesthetic of Mocaine. The song, in which Mohan sings most Cobain-like (and even wanders over to a Nirvana poster) about dreaded agoraphobia, is off their new EP Portrait of Dali. Released in August, the five-track EP ”“ by the composer’s own admission ”“ is “almost a 180” degree turn on their acoustic 2017 EP The Remainder. He says, “I don’t like calling it grunge. I have 18 of these tracks. Since last July, I’ve been trying to release these.”
The EP also features two live performances of “Waiting (Narcissus)” and “Fancy,” which amps up their angsty sound. There’s more to come off Portrait of Dali, including a video for the nostalgic “’97.” Mohan says about gigging plans, “I’m trying to go outside ”“ Bombay and Bangalore are on the immediate agenda ”“ it’s no later in mid-November. There’s an acoustic song that’s going to come out in November end.”
