Exclusive Premiere: What Escapes Me Ravage Through New Single ‘In Insanity’

The Kolkata metallers have new merch and more material on the way

The death of alt-rock band Linkin Park’s vocalist Chester Bennington affected many fans around the globe, including musicians who counted the versatile singer as a major influence. Kolkata metal band What Escapes Me’s vocalist Shourav Kumar Dey wrote the lyrics to their latest song “In Insanity” just a week after Bennington’s suicide in 2017.

Drummer Sambit Chatterjee says about the process behind their groovy new song, “Chester’s wife had discussed how depression sucks you in and [about] the fight inside. Our vocalist related to that, he wrote this song right after Chester died and in a week, he had the lyrics. We loved it, we were amazed.”

The follow-up to their 2016 full-length album Egress Point, “In Insanity” had its origin right before the release of the album, thanks to guitarist Sayan Ghosh. The song’s vocals take a step further into the experimental side for the band, with Dey showcasing a different range. Chatterjee says, “He worked very hard, we went into vocal takes for four or five months.”

Visually and sonically, the drummer says that “In Insanity” ties into their previous music video off Egress Point, “The Truth of a Lie.” He explains, “This video begins from where ”˜The Truth of a Lie’ left off.”

The song is What Escape Me’s way of kicking off the new year, which also includes a new website and new merchandise. Chatterjee, who is now based in Mumbai while the rest of the band is in Kolkata, says there are talks of shows right now, but they want to spread the music first.
