Exclusive screening of ‘Gully Life – The Story of Divine’ at Music Inc.

Conference attendees at today’s Music Inc. event, organized by music business community Loudest.in and media information platform exchange4media, will be treated to an exclusive glimpse of Gully Life – The Story of Divine. Produced by Supari Studios in association with Red Bull Media House, the Akshat Gupt directed documentary showcases the rise of India’s own hip-hop legend Vivian Fernandes aka Divine.

Rolling Stone India’s executive editor Nirmika Singh will be in conversation with Divine post the premiere of the awaited documentary. The fireside chat will also involve a Q & A segment where the audience members will be able to interact with and ask the hip-hop icon questions themselves. Divine’s ascent has been no ordinary chronicle. His journey subverted conventional stereotypes, coinciding with the growth of desi hip-hop in India. And while Bollywood’s 2019 film Gully Boy (inspired by the lives of Divine and fellow Mumbai rapper Naezy) touts mainstream acclaim and reinvention of hip-hop’s national perception, it can’t hold a candle to the visual veracity of the real deal.

Though Divine’s rise seems recent, we at Rolling Stone India have been tracking his climb since the #BombayRapCypher video dropped in 2014, featuring Mumbai rappers Kav-E, Enkore, D’evil, Poetik Justis and Divine. From his mega-hit “Mere Gully Mein” which featured Naezy to our August 2016 special Indian hip-hop edition which traced the nascent beginnings of hip-hop and its artists in the country, to Divine starting his own music festival Gully Fest and becoming one of the names synonymous with Indian hip-hop, to launching his own recordGully Gang Entertainment, the arrival of the Gully Boy wave and announcing his first album Kohinoor, Rolling Stone India has been following Divine’s journey since the get-go, chronicling the rise of Indian hip-hop, its legacy and mass effect.

The trailer for the documentary was released almost a week ago, teasing viewers to witness the nascent beginnings and eventual glory of Divine on screen.
