Epiphanies are always good, as Bengaluru/Kochi alt rockers Black Letters will tell you. It seems like that’s what was behind the shift in sound on their new EP Petrichor. The follow-up to their debut 2014 album Shapes on the Wall leans on softer, delay-laden guitars, slow beats and plenty of layers.

Petrichor was inspired by a getaway to the resort town of Wayanad in Kerala last year, frontman Sharath Narayan tells us. He says of the four-track EP, “We’ve kept it straightforward. It’s very soothing, light and has certain dream-pop elements.” Produced by Vivek Thomas [now frontman for Kerala rock veterans Motherjane], Petrichor was originally slated for release in May, but the band ”“ also comprising drummer Akash Chacko, guitarist Sarang Menon and bassist Arjun Radhakrishnan ”“ have been spending time tweaking every detail.

The first taste of the EP arrived in August, with the music video for “Phila” straight off exuding synth brightness over a steady beat. The rest of Petrichor offers more shades of Black Letters’ guitar-led rock that’s not at all as loud as Shapes on the Wall, but very much a perfect companion for star-gazing your night away.
