Here’s one for the fans of early punk: Chennai-based trio The Broadway Addicts dial back to mid to late-Seventies, ear-scraping, raw punk on their debut 8-track album No Act. Comprising vocalist Srinivas Atv, drummer Vijay Sudarsan and bassist Dilip Venkateswaran, TBA have been playing a number of local gigs since they came together in 2013, and have also been featured on indie record label ennui.BOMB’s annual compilations Stupiditties 8 and Stupiditties 9.

Although The Broadway Addicts broadly label their music as punk, No Act is largely a sonic reflection of the ‘no wave’ punk movement of the Seventies in New York, with a touch of grunge. Says Atv, who takes up most of the songwriting duties in the band: “When we call ourselves punk, people immediately think of [American punk act] Black Flag and the Eighties, hardcore punk scene, but we come from earlier punk stuff like The Stooges. We’re more inspired by the 1975 no wave scene in New York and [American] bands like Bush Tetras, Iggy Pop and The Cramps.”

No Act, which has been in the works since early 2014, features eight, lyrically-abstract regulars from their live sets, and was recorded entirely in a home set-up over the course of the year. It includes tracks like the jumpy “Running with The Gun”, the equally brash “Mister Sir” and the crowd favorite “My New Friend.”
