When Pune bassist-vocalist Darryl Paul and guitarist-vocalist Jude Bronkhurst wanted to form a band together, the one thing holding them back was that they hadn’t found a drummer for the longest time. Last year, the pair roped in sticksman Abhishek Chaubey to complete the lineup for their rock outfit Purple Patch. With a number of singles as well as 2019’s four-track EP Girls Amass under their belt, the trio are now out with their brand-new acoustic rock offering “Hey Girl!” exclusively on Rolling Stone India.

The new song — which also features the band’s latest member, singer Habib Khan — includes hooky guitar plucking, somber instrumentation and laidback vocals reminiscent of acoustic tracks from Nineties grunge music. Speaking about “Hey Girl!” Paul says, “This song is basically about a girl who’s wild, young and sweet. A little too much to take on and through this song, we’re trying to tell her to go easy in a very calming way.” He adds, “It’s like a ‘lovemaking’ song.”

Purple Patch recorded “Hey Girl!” at their home studio while Agnel Roman mixed and mastered the track. “His [Roman] experience and musical knowledge helped a ton,” says Paul. For the artwork, the band brought in South African artist Bella to feature on. The bassist says, “She fit in well for this song.” The trio plans on continuing to work on and release their music while also being optimistic that the live scene opens up soon.

Stream “Hey Girl!” below. The song is out on streaming platforms on October 7th.
