The Aizawl band reclaim old school death metal with their latest single
Don’t let the roundabout song title fool you; Aizawl metal act Third Sovereign blast nothing but straight-up old school death metal on their single “Dark Black,” that ever-so-slightly recalls French metallers Gojira [circa 2001’s Terra Incognita].
“Dark Black,” along with the rest of the nine-track release Perversion Swallowing Sanity, was chalked out during the band’s stay in Delhi, but recorded only after the four-member metal squad retreated to their hometown of Aizawl from Delhi in 2013, where they set up their own rock/metal management company, record label and recording studio dubbed Vortex Live n Loud. The track was largely penned down by drummer Reuben Lalchuangkima and guitarist Benjamin Pautu, with lyrics by vocalist Vedant Kaushik. Says Lalchuangkima about the song, “Things are darker than black nowadays since we have polluted our society and different kinds of religions””which are actually supposed to be good. We kind of polluted ourselves.”
Even the harrowing artwork for Perversion Swallowing Sanity””courtesy of Aizawl-based graphic company MassiveBrain””is proof enough that the desecration of humanity is the overarching theme on Perversion Swallowing Sanity, most of which clocks in similar to the three-minute brutality of “Dark Black.”
Third Sovereign, who will release their third album Perversion Swallowing Sanity on January 15th on Transcending Obscurity India, are currently on their Blood and Roots tour, which was recently downsized from nine cities to five. Although four cities have been canceled owing to lack of funds, Lalchuangkima explains that the band will return to play in South India in 2016 for the next leg of their tour.
