Watch EXO Get Biker-Chic in the Music Video for ‘Tempo’

The South Korean group dig into combinations of funk and electronica on their latest single off their fifth LP 'Don't Mess Up My Tempo'

After keeping fans waiting for more than a year, South Korean group EXO made a power-packed comeback today with their fifth studio album Don’t Mess Up My Tempo. The band also unveiled the gleaming music video for the LP’s lead single “Tempo.”

The nine-member group turn into edgy and chic bikers in the clip, clad in everything from leather, chains and suave jackets–main dancer Kai even rocks a crop top–as they mount motorbikes, drink in elegant bars and perform sequences of dynamic choreography.

With a running base of wavy synth, the instrumentals on “Tempo” tap into funk, disco, R&B, trap and a subtle touch of flamenco guitar right before the main bridge. While main rapper Chanyeol makes a smooth delivery on his verses, rapper Sehun is stronger on the track and gets a chance to make more of an impression. EXO have a flair for old-school R&B and vocalists D.O., Suho, Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin prove it on the intricate harmonies and background adlibs in the song’s acapella bridge. The lyrics promise the track is slick enough to steal any girls heart: ‘Don’t mess up my tempo/Listen, this will be enough/I said don’t mess up my tempo/This beat will steal her heart/It’s one of a kind.’

Don’t Mess Up My Tempo is the group’s first release since 2016’s Lotto to feature all nine EXO members ”“ Lay Zhang makes an appearance on the Chinese version of the album and in the music video for “Tempo.” The  Chinese singer/producer has been focusing on solo activities in his home country  but fans are ecstatic to see him back with his band.

Last month the group’s label SM Entertainment announced Don’t Mess Up My Tempo had raked in a grand total of 1,104,617 pre-orders ahead of its November 2nd release, making it EXO’s fifth album to cross one million in pure sales. The group also managed to grab the top three spots on Twitter’s worldwide trends, with the hashtags #TempoOutNow, #EXO_DontMessUpMyTempo and #EXO_TEMPO dominating the social media site seconds after the album’s release. The LP is also currently number one on the overall albums chart on iTunes India.
