The finale of the fourth edition of radio station Chennai Live 104.8 FM’s annual band hunt will be held  tonight at the Museum Theatre in Chennai, featuring a headlining performance by Bengaluru folk rock band Swarathma.
Finalists for the band hunt include technical/groove metal band I-Borg, alt rock band Witchouse, prog rock band The Halcyon Days, hard rock band The Beta Funktion and progressive/alternative rock band Drift. While four out of five finalists are Chennai-based bands, Drift comprises members from Vellore Institute of Technology.
Chennai Live 104.8 FM Band Hunt, which gives away a prize of Rs 75,000 to winning bands, has previously picked Chennai heavy metal band Wolf’s Lair, Bengaluru rock band The News, jam rock band The Family Cheese now based in Mumbai, and Chennai prog rock band Tails on Fire as winners. Says Rohan Sen, presenter and music manager at Chennai Live 104.8 FM, “Like any competition, we started local but we went to Bangalore last year and this year.”
Sen adds that although the number of entries reduced from 160 bands last year to 120 bands this year “the standards have changed,” which makes selecting bands a difficult decision for him and his team. The bands for the semi-finals, which took place yesterday featured 10 bands, and the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music’s faculty members including jazz bassist Steve Zerlin and music producer/guitarist Ed Degenaro are on the jury panel for the finale.
