Kerala-origin prog/alternative act Floet’s debut single “Pareidolia” takes listeners on a euphoric rollercoaster ride, through dexterous rhythms and powerful vocals.

Founded in 2017 by guitarists Nithin Vijayanath (formerly of prog veterans Motherjane) and Varun Raj (from Kerala folk-metallers The Down Troddence), the band latter added vocalist Akhil Unnikrishnan (from alt metal band Heretic) and bassist Nezer Ahamed (also from The Down Troddence). Adding to the prowess of the band is Indo-American sessions drummer Anup Sastry (whose past credits include prog band Skyharbor, Monuments and others), with “Pareidolia” produced by Malayalam rock favorites Avial’s Rex Vijayan.

With the first single out with a music video, Floet are working on their debut album, which will also feature Avial drummer Mithun Puthenveettil. The band says in a press release, “The music seamlessly blends melodic intricacy with complex rhythmic structures, creating a soundscape that pushes the boundaries of modern rock.” There’s a galloping prog pace to the rhythms and riffs on the song, occasionally balanced by slower, dreamier sections.

To the uninitiated, “Pareidolia” might come across as a Malayalam word but it’s derived from Greek and consequently German. The dictionary definition of the term is “the tendency to see patterns or objects where there are none.” In a statement about the song, Floet say, “We are all in the habit of making order from chaos and finding familiar patterns that make sense within the stretch of our imagination. We see clouds shaped like whales or a face formed on a moss-covered wall. We tend to do the same when it comes to our lives. We are quick to draw conclusions that suit our reality, often believing in a ‘one-true path’ that makes our lives meaningful. But the meaning of life is not hidden inside a single pattern or path, it’s open and wide as one can stretch their imagination. The song ‘Pareidolia’ is about how the meaning of life is whatever you choose it to be.”

Floet’s next track, titled “Satellites and Whispers,” will be out at the end of February, featuring Sastry on drums once again.
