Florence and the Machine Learn to Dance Like ‘Delilah’ on New Song

Florence and the Machine jump giddily between melodramatic bombast and dance floor exhalation on “Delilah,” a new song from their upcoming third album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful.

Driven, as always, by Florence Welch’s incomparable voice, “Delilah” begins sparsely with the singer’s multi-tracked call-and-response vocals sailing atop a simple piano and simmering synths.

The song’s first crescendo, though, doesn’t burst, but tapers back as Welch leans into her falsetto and brings “Delilah” to its exuberant, gospel-tinged core. “It’s a different kind of danger, and my feet are spinning ’round / Never knew I was a dancer until Delilah showed me how,” Welch belts defiantly throughout the song.

“Delilah” comes on the heels of previous How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful offerings, “St. Jude,” “What Kind of Man” and “Ship to Wreck.” Welch wrote and recorded the album’s 11 tracks last year with producer Markus Dravs, though the LP also features contributions from frequent collaborator ”” and Florence and the Machine bandmate ”” Isa Summers, Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory and famed producer Paul Epworth.

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful follows Florence and the Machine’s 2011 effort Ceremonials and sees release on June 2nd. Florence and the Machine are scheduled to hit the road for an extensive tour this summer that includes sets at Governors Ball, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and ACL Fest.

The band recently took the stage at Coachella as well, where Welch accidentally broke her foot. Despite limiting her stage movement, the injury didn’t otherwise hinder her riveting performances of “What Kind of Man” and “Ship to Wreck” on Saturday Night Live.
