Foo Fighters End Adele’s Record-Breaking Reign on U.K. Charts

Rockers also on track to score first U.S. Number One album

Apr 19, 2011

The Foo Fighters have ended Adele’s 11-week reign at the top of the U.K. album chart. The band’s seventh album Wasting Light narrowly outsold the British soul singer’s second disc 21, which broke Madonna’s record for the longest run at the top of the U.K. album charts but fell just short of matching Bob Marley’s all-time record set in 1984. The Foo Fighters’ success is only a minor stumbling block for Adele, though ”“ she is so popular in Britain at the moment that her 2008 debut album 19 came in at Number Three.

Though it will not be official until Wednesday, early reports indicate that the Foo Fighters are on track to debut at Number One in the United States as well. If this comes to pass, Wasting Light will become the first American Number One album in the band’s 16-year history.
