Free Download: Shubhangi Joshi’s Lush New Single ‘Foolish’
The Mumbai singer-songwriter teams up with violinist Ajay Jayanthi on her latest track
After releasing her debut four-track EP Talking Away The Night in August 2014, Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Shubhangi Joshi has been busy playing gigs across the country, performing a mix of old and new material which ranges from jazz/funk to blues. With her latest offering “Foolish,” Joshi takes a fresh sonic route. The acoustic track, produced by Mumbai violinist Ajay Jayanthi is melancholic and redemptory in equal measure. Featuring Jayanthi’s lush violins, it is reminiscent of the delightful gloom patronized by singers like Polish jazz/folk artist Anna Maria Jopek.
“I was tinkering around with my guitar and I stumbled upon this melody. It sounded different to me, I just wanted to see what I could come up with,” says Joshi on why “Foolish” is unlike her previous work. “Lyrically, the song is about a person who is on the cusp of a very big change in their life. There is no way to take that leap without really abandoning any reservations that you might have,” says the singer-songwriter.
Jayanthi (previously of folk-rock band Anand Bhaskar Collective and currently a part of alt rockers Paradigm Shift) brings his own charm on the track, both arrangement and production-wise. “I really admire Ajay as a musician; it’s been great working with him,” says Joshi. “Foolish” was also recorded at Jayanthi’s home studio.
As far as future projects are concerned, Joshi is currently plotting the release of her debut album with her band The Shubhangi Joshi Collective, comprising bassist Titus Pinto and drummer Aamir Ismail. A bunch of collaborative songs are also in the pipeline.
