Frequency Return After Year-Long Hiatus

Delhi electronic rock/metal band Frequency may be a distant memory to those who remember them from their performance at Channel [V] Launchpad in 2007, but after a year of inactivity, multiple lineup changes and self-admitted laziness, the band is set to play their first show since October 2011 in the capital at a rock and metal gig titled Metanoia 2013 on February 3rd.

“There were problems in the lineup, and we weren’t able to fix our jam schedule and when we started looking for other members, the sound kept changing,” says vocalist Lalit Mehta, who joined the band in 2007, replacing original vocalist Rony Benjamin. 

Inevitably, their sound has changed since they recorded nu-metal leaning tracks such as “Stool Knife” and “Drown,” one of their most well-known songs till date. “Now we have more electronic and rock elements, shifting towards alternative, but still some metal influence,” says Mehta.  

After keyboardist and sample effects player Akshay Raheja [ex-Faridkot] left the band in 2011, Abhishek Jha, who performs under the moniker East Stepper, stepped in to add the electronica edge. With the exception of Mehta and guitarist Kushal Thapa, the band also recruited Ashish Sharma two years ago, and shuffled through four drummers before finding Varun Sood, who also plays for Delhi melodic metal band Acrid Semblance. “It was about finding a new drummer who could play to those recorded loops, and I asked Varun to join when I saw his drum covers on YouTube,” adds Mehta.

Frequency headlines the show along with alt rockers White Beryl, hard rock band Circle of Fifths, experimental acoustic band L For Vendetta and alternative rock band Parallel to the Beach. “We’re still a bit confused about new and old songs to perform, but I have been getting a lot of requests for ”˜Drown’, so we’ll definitely play it,” says Mehta, adding that Jha will add live effects to the song’s original recorded loop. The band’s setlist will also include a cover of electronica/post-hardcore band Enter Shikari’s “Sorry You’re Not A Winner,” rap metal band Limp Bizkit’s “The Truth,” and a rendition of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep.”

When asked about the upcoming four-track EP, which was first announced in May last year, Mehta adds, “We’re waiting on the crowd’s response to the new stuff and I just have to lay down the vocals before we get down to mastering the stuff. It won’t take more than a month.”
