Mumbai-based pop-rock band Left Turn’s recently released four-track debut EP Irada is a fun-filled melodic record. There’s the jumpy opener “Pyaar Ho Gaya,” escapism with “Tum Mili,” the folksy title track and the acoustic rock-oriented record closer “Maan Ja.” While the band uses the acoustic guitar heavily across the EP, we also hear plenty of flavorful grooves, fascinating instrumentation, cheerful vocals and more. The band – comprising vocalist-guitarist Suraag Subhedar, drummer Jairaj Joshi, keyboardist Sasmit Rudra and bassist Reagan D’mello – tell us that the EP is only the start towards what they have planned for the rest of the year. Subhedar says, “The EP for us is a walk through our emotions, our lives and how we were influenced as people.”
Bengaluru-bred and Boston-based singer-songwriter Ashwin Sriram aka ASHWYN delivers quite a tasty Seventies guitar-sounding track juxtaposed with textured sounds, lush strumming, his textured vocals and more. The hooky guitar line in the song sticks in your mind, and Sriram says the track touches upon how young artists have become pressured and dependent on the numbers game. In a statement, he says, “[It’s] important [to] stay true to yourself and your vision.”
Pune-based funk-rock and prog band Odyssey 147 introduce themselves to the country’s independent music scene with their groovy and upbeat debut single “Chicken Nuggets.” Filled with chunky guitar parts, flowing drumming and gliding bass lines as well as dreamy vocals, the track is written from the point of view of a “lonely nugget left at the back of the freezer which ultimately finds its way out one day.” Recorded at the city-based Gray Spark Audio, the band’s plan going forward is to release an EP soon.
