Game Review: Injustice: Gods Among Us

We’ve seen a few fighting games this generation featuring Marvel characters, so it was just a matter of time before DC Comics decided to get in on the action. While Injustice: Gods Among Us lacks the cartoony, campy flair of the Marvel Vs. Capcom series, it does more than enough to hold its own. 

Taking its cues from 2011’s superlative Mortal Kombat, Injustice features a robust story mode that lets you don the role of who’s who from the DC universe. From everyone’s favorite, Batman to Superman, and even lesser known heroes such as the Green Arrow and Aquaman, there’s a roster that has something for everyone. Take enough damage (or dole out a fair amount of it) and you can charge up for a super attack that’s as entertaining as it is over the top. Our personal favorite? Superman pummelling his opponent into space and crashing him back down. It makes for great viewing and never gets old.

From time to time, fighters will jump towards each other to deal vital blows. It’s at this juncture when you can wager an amount of your power bar to ensure the outcome is in your favor. Bet correctly and you’d get a health or damage bonus. Also, you can throw your opponent against a massive statue or just far enough to get slapped around by villains from the lore of Gotham City.  Follow it up by chucking garbage bins, tombstones or missiles as you see fit. Don’t be surprised if you end up feeling like you have a superhero complex.

 There’s a lot of detailing, which if you pay attention to, can help you win even if you don’t have the greatest of skills. This holds true in multiplayer as well which was flawless online and more joyous offline.

All in all, Injustice is a fun superhero-filled romp that fighting newbies and hardcore fans can indulge in without feeling to daunting or watered down. There’s enough in terms of features and craziness to keep you playing this for a long time to come.
