Sequel to 2010’s runaway military shooter hit, Battlefield 4 ups what made its predecessor such a joy to play in gargantuan proportions. For starters, everything and anything can be decimated with a hail of bullets or the right explosive persuasion. With a smorgasbord of rocket launchers, mortars and even planes to pilot, there’s more than enough to keep you busy in the game’s robust multiplayer mode. Jumping into a match is quick, fast and a ton of fun ”“ even if you are on the losing side.

As far as multiplayer experiences go, this is perhaps the best we’ve played this generation. The sheer thrill of levelling an entire building whilst trapping your foes never gets old. Although the PC version suffers from its share of bugs and connection issues, playing it on the PS3 or Xbox 360 is fine. Sure, the console versions lack the visual fidelity a killer desktop brings to the table, but the gameplay is enjoyable all the same.Throw in a host of modes ranging from the usual team deathmatch to the series staple (and still one of the better modes around) conquest, and you have enough to keep you playing well into the next-generation of consoles.

All along the way, slick controls, accurate sound effects and tightly paced gunplay makes any quirks it has worth the while. Speaking of quirks, there are a few. Namely a rubbish single-player campaign. Don’t let looks fool you, beneath the fantastic graphics and gripping set-pieces lies a rather hollow single-player experience. An extremely short one at that complete with brittle voice-acting and ridiculously bad AI. Luckily, the multiplayer component is good enough for you not to bother with it.

So if you’re looking for a slick shooter to play with your friends online, you can’t go wrong with Battlefield 4. If you plan to play this for the single-player campaign, you’re better off spending your money on something else. Like getting some friends to play this game in multiplayer.
